Department: Field Operations / Technical Services

Reports To: Field Services Manager / Field Services Co-Ordinator / Operations Manager

Job Purpose

The Graduate Field Technician is responsible for supporting field-based technical operations through the installation, commissioning, operation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and servicing of specialist field instrumentation and monitoring equipment. The role requires a motivated graduate with strong technical aptitude, a commitment to safety and quality, and a willingness to undertake supplier training and professional development.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations

  • Install, commission, and maintain field instrumentation and monitoring equipment.
  • Carry out routine inspections, testing, calibration, and preventative maintenance.
  • Diagnose equipment faults and perform repairs or coordinate repairs with manufacturers where required.
  • Collect, validate, and record field data accurately.
  • Prepare technical reports and service documentation.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company procedures, client specifications, and relevant industry standards.
  • Travel to customer and project sites as required.
  • Support emergency call-outs and scheduled maintenance activities when required.

Instrumentation

Operate and maintain a range of field instruments including, but not limited to:

  • Environmental monitoring equipment
  • Flow and level monitoring instruments
  • Water quality instrumentation
  • Pressure and temperature sensors
  • Data loggers and telemetry systems
  • GPS and survey equipment
  • Electrical and electronic test equipment
  • Portable calibration equipment

 

Health, Safety & Quality

  • Comply with all Health & Safety legislation and company policies.
  • Complete site risk assessments and method statements.
  • Use appropriate PPE and maintain safe working practices.
  • Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in good working order.

Customer Support

  • Represent the company professionally on client sites.
  • Provide technical support to customers during installations and maintenance visits.
  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding work completed and any recommendations.

Administration

  • Complete service reports and timesheets accurately.
  • Maintain calibration and maintenance records.
  • Assist with inventory management of field equipment and spare parts.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Third-level qualification) in one of the following disciplines:
    • Engineering (Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic or Civil)
    • Environmental Science
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Instrumentation
    • Physics
    • Applied Sciences
    • Other relevant technical discipline

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Membership or graduate membership of an appropriate professional body.

Training & Certification Requirements

The successful candidate will be expected to complete and maintain relevant training and certifications, including:

Supplier Training

The Graduate Field Technician will complete manufacturer-approved training on company equipment and instrumentation, which may include:

  • Instrument installation and commissioning.
  • Calibration procedures.
  • Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting.
  • Software configuration and firmware updates.
  • Telemetry and communications systems.
  • Product-specific certification from equipment manufacturers.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and instrumentation.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and manuals.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and electronic systems.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn specialist software applications.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.

Experience

  • Experience using calibration equipment.
  • Basic understanding of telemetry and remote monitoring systems.
